Propane Tank Installation What Is Involved?

Above ground and underground requirements

Propane tank installation is not included in the tank purchase price and is not performed by the tank supplier. After your tank is delivered by flatbed freight, you arrange installation with a licensed local propane contractor. The contractor handles all site work, connections, and inspections before filling.

Above Ground Requirements

Above ground propane tank installation requires a reinforced concrete pad poured before delivery. The pad must be flat, level, and sized to match the tank. A 500 gallon tank requires approximately a 10 by 5 foot pad. A 1000 gallon tank requires approximately a 17 by 5 foot pad. The contractor sets saddle legs, installs the regulator, runs the supply line to the structure, and connects to your appliances per NFPA 58.

Setback distances from structures, property lines, and ignition sources are regulated by NFPA 58 and your local jurisdiction. A 500 gallon above ground tank must typically be set back at least 10 feet from any structure. Your contractor will confirm the required setbacks for your specific installation.

Underground Propane Tank Installation

Underground installation requires excavation before the tank can be set. The excavation must be sized to match the tank with adequate clearance on all sides. A 500 gallon underground tank requires an excavation of approximately 11 by 5 feet. A 1000 gallon underground tank requires approximately 18 by 6 feet. The contractor excavates, prepares the bedding, sets the tank, backfills, and installs the dome cover at grade level for filling and gauge access.

All underground propane tanks from Propane Tank Pro are factory coated for direct burial to ASME Section VIII specification before shipment. The burial coating protects the tank from soil corrosion. View underground tanks from $2,350.

Who Performs Propane Tank Installation?

Installation must be performed by a licensed propane contractor in your state. Your propane supplier will typically connect you with an approved installer or have in-house installation teams. Get at least two quotes before committing. Installation cost varies significantly by region, soil conditions, site access, and distance from your structure to the tank location.

Installation FAQ

Common questions answered
Is propane tank installation included in the tank price?

No. The tank price from Propane Tank Pro covers the tank and freight only. Installation is arranged separately with a licensed local contractor after delivery. We deliver the tank to your address by flatbed freight and you arrange installation locally. This keeps our tank prices lower and lets you choose your preferred installer.

Can I do propane tank installation myself?

No. Installation must be performed by a licensed propane contractor. Your propane supplier will not fill the tank without certification from a licensed installer. NFPA 58 requires that all installation, connections, and pressure testing be performed by qualified personnel. DIY propane tank installation is not permitted and is unsafe.

How long does propane tank installation take?

Above ground installation typically takes one day once the concrete pad is cured and the tank is on site. Underground installation typically takes two to three days including excavation, setting, and backfill. The concrete pad for above ground must cure for 5 to 7 days before the tank is delivered, so plan pad work before ordering.
